Bill McKeever of Mormonism
Research Ministries emailed us the following:
"Just when I thought the homage to Joseph
Smith could not get any worse, I heard that the there was a nativity
scene in the administration building on the BYU campus that celebrates
his birth. I had to drive down to see it for myself. There it was, a
cradle set in a 19th century-looking log cabin. The sign next to the
display reads: 'We are the beneficiaries of the restored gospel of Jesus
Christ, a work which had its earthly commencement with the birth of
Joseph Smith, in the hills of Vermont on a December day in 1805. As
we commemorate the birth of the baby in Bethlehem, the Saviour of the
world, may we also remember his messenger, Joseph Smith, and rejoice
in his life and sacrifice.' The blindness exhibited by the Mormon people
is so great. Needless to say, it is difficult not to be grieved by this."
Mike Thomas comments:
As a Christian ministry we find ourselves frequently involved in a balancing
act. On the one hand we are determined to expose error and promote the
truth of God's glorious gospel. On the other we try to model and promote
a Christlike attitude to those caught in error and encourage bridge
building. The passion we feel for the truth, in other words, is tempered
by the compassion we feel for the lost. Sometimes, however, we hear
and see things that stir in us feelings of outrage and indignation and
this story is one of those things. We have already, and at length, written
about the Mormon heresy that robs the Cross of it's efficacy by placing
the atonement of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and making its effect
dependent on our obedience.
We now find that, at the end of a year marking the 200th anniversary
of Joseph Smith's birth in which he has been lauded and praised to a
sickening degree, Mormonism is highjacking Christmas, putting "baby
Joseph" in a crib, and celebrating his advent. The email message from
Bill McKeever, accompanying the pictures below, sums up very well the
amazement we might all feel about this affront to Christian orthodoxy
and, sensitivity to the plight of the lost and deceived notwithstanding,
we must express our outrage at such bare-faced audacity. We have also
decided to do them a favour and rewrite a popular carol to reflect the
"true meaning" of the Mormon Christmas.
In Sharon, Windsor County, a crib for
his bed
The little lord Joseph laid down his sweet head.
The angel Moroni looked down where he lay
Lord Joseph, he knew, would translate him one day.
The Christians defame him, The prophet awakes
But little lord Joseph no crying he makes.
I love thee lord Joseph! look down from the sky,
And plan for your brethren, exalt us on high.
Be near me, lord Joseph; I ask thee to grant
a passport to heaven, that's all that I want.
I've been to the temple, I've worked very hard,
please let me live in your Celestial back yard.
