The full details of the religion of people
in England and Wales collected in the 2001 Census have now been released.
The total population was calculated at 58,789,194 and it shows that
just over 37 million (63%) claim to be Christian. However that would
include 70,651 (0.12%) who said they were Jehovah's Witnesses and 12,722
(0.02%) claiming to belong to the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints (Mormons).
With all the figures though it should be noted that the religion question was voluntary, and
4,011,000 people chose not answer it.
Muslim with 1.546,626 were the next biggest group although there were over 7 million who
claimed to have no religion at all. Hindus recorded 552,421, Sikhs 329,358 and 259,927
said they were Jewish.
Whether everyone answered honestly is open to question when you have 390,127 claiming to
follow Jedi Knights - presumably the force is with them!
Those believing in Paganism, Witchcraft or the Occult were broken down
in to different groups but the total registered was just under 75,000
- although when all the 'new age' type groups are also added this rises
to just under 90,000. The biggest groups being Spiritualists with 32,404
and Pagans 30,569 but only 1,525 claimed to be Satanists. For further
details see the Telegraph
Online and the National
Statistics Website
